Sopwith Pup previews in scale 1:72.

Frederick Sage was a shop fitting company that turned to aircraft production to help with the war effort. Unlike the Camel, the Pup was considered to be an easy aircraft to fly but was eventually outclassed by new German fighters so that it was withdrawn from combat towards the end off 1917 when the Sopwith Camel … The Pup originally appeared with the designation of Admiralty "Type 9901" and only later acquired the "Pup" name.

Sopwith never called the Pup a fighter, in fact they never called it the Pup either, it was always the Sopwith Scout.

Just arrived at Hercules Propellers, a very beautiful original Sopwith Pup propeller. These were mounted in the nose, using synchronization gear to let them fire straight ahead without shooting off the propeller. The Sopwith Pup entered service in 1916. In case a review is missing feel free to add them, this can be done on the individual product pages (for members only). The machine gun was key -- a trusty Vickers gun equipped with a hydraulic synchronizing gear which allowed it to fire through the propeller.

Sopwith Camel taking off. Availability:: Domestic orders ship within 2-3 business days. Figure 1 of that report is a prop for a two bladed, clockwise rotation (as viewed from in front of the aircraft) propeller for a B.R.1 engined camel. The Pup and 1½ Strutter were the first successful British tractor fighters equipped with a synchronisation gear to allow a machine gun to fire through the rotating propeller. This huge propeller measured 102" diameter and was manufactured by Frederick Sage & Co. Ltd during the First World War. "They were tiny little things," says a British pilot, "just big enough for one man and a machine gun."

This Sopwith Pup padded windscreen (also fitted to the Sopwith 1 ½ Strutter), fixes onto the handles on the rear of the Vickers machine gun. This gear was known as the Sopwith-Kauper gear from its designers, although several other designs were used later. The prop diameter was 102 inches if my conversion calculations are correct. The name Pup was unofficial and took some time before it generally caught on. Unlike the Camel, the Pup was considered to be an easy aircraft to fly but was eventually outclassed by new German fighters so that it was withdrawn from combat towards the end off 1917 when the Sopwith Camel and SE 5 became the pre-eminent British fighters.
