This is what I get for leaving the house with out my camera. All these birds are mostly found in fields and sometimes in the woods. The bill is short and thick. I've haven't had much luck in trying to figure out what it was. The black birds are no exception. Birds of North America Very Small (3 - 5 In). Phainopepla: Small, flycatcher-like bird with glossy black body. It had the crest of feathers on it's head like a cardinal and sort of the same shape. Legs and feet are black. Blue Jay. In most places, the most common black-colored of the birds in the yard is likely the starling. Though less showy, females are also splendid, wearing soft, tawny feathers instead of the male's bright red plumage. Gray wings, tail. A little gray bird with an echoing voice, the Tufted Titmouse is common in eastern deciduous forests and a frequent visitor to feeders. The blue jay is an intelligent bird which has a large crest and a wide, rounded tail. Black-colored--or at least mostly black-colored--birds in the yard tend to be one of these: European Starling, Common Grackle, Red-winged Blackbird, and Brown-headed Cowbird. Feeds primarily on mistlestoe berries and small insects.
Weak flight with shallow wing beats. A bird of Texas and northeastern Mexico, the Black-crested Titmouse is common in oak woods and towns. The large black eyes, small, round bill, and brushy crest gives these birds a quiet but eager expression that matches the way they flit through canopies, hang from twig-ends, and drop in to bird feeders. Mexican Chickadee. The crows and the starlings are more comfortable around people and can also be found in cities. I saw a bird last night that looked like a slightly skinnier, smaller cardinal except that it was black. Direct flight is high and fluttery. Depending on your habitat, American Crows may also visit your yard. Head has distinct crest and short, thin, black bill. Flies short distances with several quick wing beats, then pulls wings to sides. Iris is red. A bird to be seen in the full sun, the male Brewer’s Blackbird is a glossy, almost liquid combination of black, midnight blue, and metallic green. White-collared Swift. The head has a black cap and bib, with white cheeks. There are a number of bird types that fit this category. Tail is long. From the large ravens and crows to the medium-sized grackles to the smaller birds, such as blackbirds, cowbirds, and starlings. Any help would be appreciated. Wings have large white patches visible in flight. The black-capped chickadee is a tiny bird with a very large head in comparison to its body and a short neck and long thin tail. It has a gray back, wings and tail. Females are a staid brown, without the male’s bright eye or the female Red-winged Blackbird’s streaks.
