The climb is well worth it as you walk through the scenic valley of desolation on to Barden Fell. Route: Parking at Barden Bridge, River Wharfe, Valley of Desolation, Simon's Seat, down to the Wharfe and back along the river to Barden Bridge. A quick visit to Barden Tower near to Barden Bridge.

5. Simon's Seat is a rocky, wild moor top that makes for a great walk from many different locations in the Yorkshire Dales.

The parish also includes two areas of moorland, Barden Fell to the east of the River Wharfe and Barden Moor to the west of the river. On leaving the trees carry straight on up a well defined path across the moor to the summit of Simon's Seat. The second half is a repeat of the walk along the River Wharfe found in the Barden Tower, The Strid and Bolton Priory walk. I'm planning a little saunter to Bolton Abbey to run up to Simon's Seat then over to Upper Barden Reservoir. Follow the path up through the woods.

From the waterfall retrace your steps to rejoin the path from the wooden footbridge. Both moorlands are access land, and are popular with walkers. I think they have a slightly better view.

Further down river now at The Strid, care needed here. the bridge and follow the path to the upper waterfall. It has an initial climb of over 350m from your starting out point at Bolton Abbey to the highest point of 485m at Simon's Seat. In good weather and being brave I would have descended down to Howgill and then attempted the stepping stones across to then run through Drebley and on and up to Upper Barden Res. 6. Its close proximity to places such as Bolton Abbey, Barden Bridge and villages like Appletreewick, easily allows this moorland highpoint to be incorporated into a good circular walk. Simon's Seat is a rocky outcrop 485m above sea level. The first half uses the focal point of Simon's Seat, a rocky outcrop reminiscent of those found in the Peak District - taken from the aforementioned walk. 8. The Abbey through the trees. A steep descent from Simon's Seat leads down to Dalehead Farm and the road down to the river. Turn right up the ladder stile in the wall.
