You’ll run across this handsome gull in large numbers at beaches, docks, and parking lots, where they wait for handouts or fill the air with their raucous calls. There was discussion about the possibility of the bird being a Lava Gull, but local experts determined it was a melanistic laughing gull. While the experts are debating the ID, I thought it best to get the word out and folks out looking.
The common gull (Larus canus) or sea mew is a medium-sized gull that breeds in the Palearctic, northern Europe, and northwestern North America.The North American subspecies is commonly referred to as the mew gull, although that name is also used by some authorities for the whole species.
