Orginally developed in Kentucky in the late 19th century, the breed is undergoing a 21st-century renaissance. Standard weights for Bourbon Reds are 23 pounds for young toms and 14 pounds for young hens. A man named J. F. Barbee originally bred Bourbon Reds by crossing Bronze, Holland and Dark Buff Tuskarora turkeys in the late 1800s.
