The absence of dingoes and foxes has made Tasmania a refuge for many unique species like the devil and quolls. However, such control programs may place some native carnivores at risk, particularly the spotted-tailed quoll in eastern Australia. I was staking out a large wombat burrow for a few weeks and discovered a definite interaction with foxes and the burrow. Impact of Fox baiting on Tiger Quoll populations (PDF - 626.82 KB) About the report The NSW Threat Abatement Plan for Predation by the Red Fox (TAP) identifies foxes as a major threat to the survival of many native mammals. Cats and dingoes had negative relationships with water up to 1000 m, while quolls had a positive relationship with distance to water in the same category. Canberra foxes and quolls A remote camera photographed this little feral fox last year on the Murrumbidgee River at Tharwa. In Australia, baiting with 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) is widely used to reduce predation of native wildlife by the red fox. Its distribution and population have dramatically declined, and the animal is now found over a restricted range. If we can protect our wildlife the value of the Tasmanian environment will increase, globally, as other places degrade. Quolls (/ ˈ k w ɒ l /; genus Dasyurus) are carnivorous marsupials native to Australia and New Guinea. They are primarily nocturnal and spend most of the day in a den. The spotted-tailed quoll is listed as a vulnerable species in NSW. Of the six species of quoll, four are found in Australia and two in New Guinea. In many cases, quolls are living in isolated areas that may be too small to support viable long-term populations. Another two species are known from fossil remains in Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits in Queensland. Tasmanian devils and quolls are unique and spectacular animals making them a valuable tourism and biological asset. The inverse relationship occurs with distance to water between 1001 and 2000 m, where cats and dingoes had a positive relationship to this category, while quolls had a negative one.
