Except for the cold areas, the species in the subfamily of the Giant Ibis are distributed throughout most of the world where there is a suitable habitat. The Giant IBIS the most endangered and evolutionary distinctive bird in the world. They were the first of the species to be found there in more than a decade. These birds frequent the shallow water covered terrain: marshes, the margins of lakes and rivers, coasts and other similar sites. Preah Sihanouk province is Cambodia's most famous beach town. Ibis inhabits salt marshes, swamps, areas near the lakes and rivers, tropical mangroves, forests and marshy mountain meadows. To all these habitats it adapts very easily. The giant ibis (Thaumatibis gigantea) is a species of wading bird classified in the family Threskiornithidae, which also includes other species of ibis and spoonbill. Better known as Kampong Som to locals, it is about 230 km southwest of Phnom Penh and boasts pristine white-sand beaches, unspoiled tropical islands, and a dynamic nightlife. They are lowland birds that occur in the marshes, wide rivers and seasonal water meadows in semi open forests as their name suggest, being the largest of the IBIS species they are some huge birds. Pollution of the water with pesticides, uncontrolled hunt and habitat destruction are the major threats for the survival of ibises in the wild. It breeds in wet season As a lowland bird, it likes to wade in water, preferably swamps, lakes, rivers, flooded plains, ponds and seasonal water meadows. It can live in lakes, rivers, swamps, open forests and plains. The Giant Ibis is pretty shy Shy by nature, the birds feed in secluded forest pools that are far from villages.

In August 2017, 19 nests were found in Preah Vihear’s Kulen Promtep and Chhep wildlife sanctuaries, the natural habitat of many Giant Ibis. And in September of the same year, two pairs were found in Mondulkiri’s Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary.
